Kimmy Mac’s Comp Wrap – ‘Chloe’s day’

27 Oct

Chloe Byron’s spirit was smiling down on us all at Bondi Beach, Sunday 16th Oct as friends of the Byron family and Surfers from the 3 Boardriders clubs in Bondi, and all over NSW came together as one, to pay tribute to a beautiful young lady who lost her life all too soon.

The energy coming from the grass above 3rd ramp was buzzing throughout the morning, even a whale put on a show for us in glorious fashion launching itself out of the water ,over and over again. The day was truly blessed. Continue reading

Last minute reminder for this Sunday’s comp

14 Oct
The weather man is promising a stunning 22-25 degrees, fine and sunny day for the Chloe Byron Memorial Contest, hosted by the Bondi Longboard club this Sunday.
Brenda from ‘Lets Go Surfing ‘ will have some “soft” longboards for those of you nervous about negotiating a big log through the Sunday crowd.
It is a huge day and to ensure the it runs smoothly we are appealing to all members to do our club proud, and help out where you can.
There are plenty of jobs going on the day, please ask what you can do to help.
Here are some things you can volunteer for.
  • Dave Byron needs helpers in the food tent throughout the day, cutting up salad, buttering bread and washing up, so if you have a spare half hour to help him, that would be great.
  • A fantastic way to meet other surfers is to grab a book of raffle tickets, walk around the contest area and sell, sell, sell.  You will be amazed how many people you will know next time your out surfing at Bondi.
  • Judging – you will be called on to judge during the day. It’s usually 3 heats before yours. Pleas make make sure you find out when it will be your turn and if you can’t judge please make sure you find a substitute. (see me if you get stuck)
  • Tia Byron can always use help with the raffles
  • Jo East may need some help tallying
  • Ask often, “How can i help?”
  • Remember to wear your BGSR club T.Shirt for a team photo .
  • Introduce yourselves to the other surfers, especially to Dave and Tia Byron.
  • If you go for a free surf, please make sure it is well away from the competitors bank.
Well, i think that’s everything,  see you all bright and early and make sure  you bring your biggest smiles.
  • When - Sunday, 16 October
  • Meet at 7am - at the BGSR Tent between 7 and 7.30am.
  • First Heat - 8am
  • Memorial paddle out - 1pm
  • Cost - $10 includes breakfast (Under 16’s free)
  • Raffle tickets – There will be tickets on sale on the day. If you have sold tickets prior, please hand in already scrunched.
  • Plan to stay for the day - BGSR Rock up points will only be awarded to those who surf their heat and unfortunately we can’t predict what time your heat will be scheduled.
  • Day ends - Approx 3pm
Cheers, Kim McMahon

Oct comp – Sunday 16th October 2011

4 Oct
OCTOBER CONTEST/ CHLOÉ BYRON MEMORIAL

This year for our October comp, we are joining forces with Bondi Longboard club to celebrate the life of Chloe Byron, in a memorial contest like no other. This event brings together the surf communities from Bondi and beyond, for a day of remembrance and surfing fun. Bring your friends, family, the kids and your dogs and plan to to stay for a day you won’t forget.
In 2002 one of the Longboard club’s founding members, Dave Byron, sadly lost his daughter, Chloé, in the Bali bombings.  Chloe was a member of both Bondi Girls Surfriders and the Longboard club and regularly competed in the monthly contests, as well as inter-club events.
Every October the longboarder’s monthly contest is held in memory of Chloé’s infectious spirit and adventurous board riding. The contest comprises Men, Women and Juniors (16yrs & under).  Trophies are awarded at the end of the day and for a bit of fun contestants are required to have a boogie before their heat, with great prizes awarded to the most creative/silly dancers.
This is a longboard event (boards over 9ft).  If you don’t have a longboard there will be plenty you can borrow on the day. Don’t stress about riding a longboard, its a fun event and you will be awarded BGSR points if you compete, so all you have to do is paddle out and have fun.
  • All proceeds from the day are donated to a charity chosen by Dave & Tia Byron – “The Homicide Victims’ Support Group” (formed in 1993 to provide support, counseling and information for families and friends affected by homicide in NSW)
  • Raffle prizes are donated by the local community and businesses, as well as leading surf companies whose support is greatly appreciated.

When - Sunday, 16 October (this is instead of our first Saturday of the month comp)
Meet at 7am - all hands on deck to set up tent.
Registrations - at the BGSR Tent between 7 and 7.30am.
First Heat - 8am
Memorial paddle out - 1pm
Cost - $10 includes breakfast (Under 16’s free)
Raffle tickets – There will be tickets on sale on the day. If you have sold tickets prior, please hand in when registering.
Plan to stay for the day - BGSR Rock up points will only be awarded to those who surf their heat and unfortunately we can’t predict what time your heat will be scheduled.

Day ends - Approx 3pm
See you bright and early

10 Questions with Rach Haych

27 Sep

This week’s BGSR featured feline is the wonderful Rach Hainsworth. Between the upkeep of the BGSR website and home renovations in the Gong, you wouldn’t think Rach would have much time for hitting the surf. But she’s always ready for a stab. Let’s take 5 with her…..

Kimmy Mac’s Sept Comp Wrap

SPRING AT LAST!

Sun – was shining on the Bondi Girls Surfriders for our comp on the 1st Saturday of September, it felt so good to finally say goodbye to winter under sunny, warm skies.

Swell – around 2-3ft , light offshore winds and an in-coming tide, made for a great morning. From the juniors right through to the advanced, the game is lifting and it is great to see that all the girls are improving each month.

  • Shout out to - New member Mahaut, (pronounced Maow) who sprained her ankle in the juniors and spent the rest of the morning watching the comp from the lifeguard tower. Thanks to Azza and the boys for looking after her so well. Sorry about the injury, hope you heal quickly.. see you next comp.
  • Jo Lamb who came down to say hi, met some of the girls and is coming back next month to start competing.
  • Mark your calendar – 16th Oct we join with the Bondi Longboard Club, for the “Chloe Byron Memorial Contest”. (there will be no comp the 1st week oct) details soon.

SEPT RESULTS

Grade 1st 2nd 3rd
Juniors Bella Hunter Camille Chupin Mahaut Armand
Junior Advanced Claire Coleman Lucy Kavanagh Juna
Adult beginners Donna Draper Sophia Bartlett Sarah Shannon
Intermediate B Lisa May Anne Sommer Jacki Jameson
Intermediate A Kim McMahon Sophie Kijas Suzy (from Germany)
Advanced Claire Youmans Juna Milly Hyde

This month i asked a few of the gang for their thoughts about the day, here is what they said….

Comp highlights

“Definitely the advanced final, awesome surfing from the girls with some of the highest waves i’ve scored, and the only time all 10 waves have been used up.” Jade Mcmanus

The advanced surfers following Claire norman’s advice and ‘stretching’ before their heats. Chrissy can definitely touch her toes!”  (see photo) Olivia Lucas

“The laughter when we the comp directors, had a brain snap/wave, realising we could copy last comps heat design instead of reinventing the wheel every comp”. Sophie Kijas

My highlight was not coming last in my heat again”…:) Anna Sordo. “I agree Anna, not coming last definitely was my highlight too  :-) and not getting sunburnt.”  Sofia

Who most impressed you?

“Milo, with her styling carves on the peeling little right handers….made even more stylish with the matching board and rashie”. Claire Youmans

“Rach H, just before her heat, killed a spider in her wetsuit (after it bit her) and still went out!” Sophie K

“Michelle G’s fabulous body language and the girls on the loud speaker encouraging the ‘Int B’ to move into a better position, out the back. Rach was the only one listening, paddled out the back and started to mix up the scoring, pulling a good wave out of the bag because of it.” Sophie Kijas

“For me it was Sofia Bartlett, for her enthusiasm, positive energy and the way she just gets involved with no fuss.” Jade McManus

Oh sheyezza”! “Who was that in the beginners who was carving it up and only been surfing for about 2 months”? “I gave her an 8 for one wave! I don’t know who she was, she may have been wearing a zorro mask!” Milly

“Watching our new ‘A grader’ Juna surf brilliantly in the heats and finals was inspiring and great to watch. She is now giving our junior A graders a run for their money – and they love competition.” Sophie K

“The other women in my heat (int B)– they all did really well!” Karen Sowada

“Donna Draper taking out the adult beginners, she absolutely gunned it” – well done!

Surfer / Wave of the day

“Anyone in the beginner adult or groms, there were some really good waves caught by them in the heats and finals.” Jade McManus

Wave of the day for me was Donna D in the beginners. She took off on a green wave, rode across it and had a long ride. Love seeing a new member lift the bar.” Olivia Lucas

“I think the one I wasn’t scored on…(11th wave)  Ha ha… Teach me for being greedy…. ;-) .” Claire Youmans

The stand out of the day was Donna Draper in Beginners. She caught some cracking waves, some to rival those in Intermediate A, and has proven herself ready to go up a grade next year. Clare Youmans also caught some really beautiful waves in the Advanced Final. I have to admit I did stop to watch a couple.” Christine Riakos

Positive reflections

“I absolutely love surfing in the Advanced Grade. I have so much to learn and there is such a wealth of skill and knowledge amongst these girls which they are happy to pass on, even in a competitive environment.” Christine Rialkos

“Tops, wish I could have teleported the waves, the sun and the BRSR’s down the coast to surf all day with no crowd!” Jade

“Best waves in Bondi yet – I actually ENJOYED the Heat and actually CAUGHT some waves!” Sophie kijas

“Really fun event with some awesome surfing from Claire Y and Milo. So glad I dragged my ass out of bed…cant wait till the next one!” Anna Sordo

“I shoulda been there!” Karen

“I can’t wait for next month!!!”  Such a fun day today ladies” :) Sofia Bartlett

Good wholesome fun in the sun….. Great morning with a great bunch of girls… Good vibes all round….” Claire Y”

“Don’t be afraid of the boys out the back” . Rach H

It was a beautiful sunny day, with much merriment, great surfing conditions, and good comradeship felt amongst alllllllll.” Sophie Kijas

And a final word that says it all, from the Prez

“Was awesome hey?!? What a kick butt crew we’ve got happening… You all rock” x  Olivia Lucas

Have a great September

Cheers

Kim McMahon
