Out of the Vault #2
24 JulThe second in our extremely popular series. This time we head back to the late 1980s with a story about falling in (and out of) love with surfing.
Surf’s Up
By Karen de Perthuis
It all started at Bronte one summer.
‘I’m thinking of taking up surfing,’ I said to a boy I was trying to impress.
‘Can you ride a skateboard?’
‘A skateboard?’
‘Do you ski?’ I had bought a very fashionable ski-jacket on sale once, but it was still brand new and anyway I didn’t really want to wear it in the water.
‘Well…’
‘Surfing,’ he said, standing up to let the early morning sun frame his golden curls in a god-like halo, ‘is much harder – in fact, it’s been called the hardest and most complex activity known to Man. You see, you have to balance on a moving object.’
He looked down at me. ‘Maybe you should try boogie-boarding instead. It’s much easier.’

tell your story, travelling surfer girls
22 JunAn email from Laura:
Dear Surfer Girls, I am doing a research study as part of my Honours at Southern Cross University this year (As some of you may have noticed, I haven’t been around – strapped to the computer). My project is about female surfers and their motivations, barriers/challenges and how they overcome these when travelling for surfing either domestic or overseas. In order to do that, I need to interview approximately 30 female surfers (age 18 plus) that have been travelling for surfing at some point. (more…)

Surfboard for sale – $100 – recommended for intermediate surfer
24 AprVersatile board – Tiki brand – a unique hybrid between a fish and a gun.
7 foot long, just under 20 inches wide. Moves quite fast, turns well. I actually learnt to surf on this board, and did fine when I was going out a lot. Then I went back and bought a fatter, longer board for an easier ride. If I wasn’t going away, I would hang onto it to use again. But the board must go as I’m packing up my house in two months time. A few people like Nell have ridden this board and can vouch for it as well. It had a ding on the nose when I bought it, and with me copped one on the side, but everything has been perfectly repaired, and thoroughly gone over by the Ding Doctor. It’s in great shape, and comes with a bag.
