Disabled Surfer’s Association Surf Day – Sat Feb 27 – Collaroy Park

15 Feb

Lovely Miki from the Sydney Surf Group has given me the heads up about the next DSA Sydney event. See her note below.  BGSR girls, show your love by helping out on the day. If you can, wear your BGSR t-shirt from last year. RSVP by commenting on this post so I can email DSA numbers.

Hi everyone,

The Disabled Surfers Association (DSA) is a totally voluntary organisation existing purely on the support of their members and the local communities together with the occasional government help. Over the past 2 decades it has grown to 9 branches in 4 states.

The Sydney Branch has one day a year when it takes people of all disabilities for a “Hands On Day” to the beach to provide a safe and happy surfing experience to those who would otherwise rarely or never have the opportunity to enjoy the ocean or the stoke of riding on a wave. They have a very high helper to participant ratio, from a minimum of 6 to 1 out to as high as 30 to 1 with challenging participants. As such, volunteers are in great demand.Any person with a good heart can help at a DSA event but if you are a water-oriented type, you are additionally welcome. They only surf in broken waves in waist depth water so the ability to surf for volunteers is not necessary.

I personally find it absolutely wonderful each and every time I go for a surf and often take for granted my ability to just get up and head out whenever I get the inclination. To be able to share the life force and energy of the ocean with others and assist them to experience the thrill of surfing will be truly incredible.

Start time: Recommended arrival time is 9 am. Volunteers are trained at 9:30 am for a 10 am start. Finish time: Approx 2 pm. Volunteers do not have to stay until the finish – can come and go as they please. A free BBQ will be provided at the end. Location: Collaroy Beach – best place to meet is at the playground at Colloroy Park. We will be given a coloured volunteer rashie to wear during the event. Info on the DSA and the event here.  Thanks, Miki.
