party /’pâ:ti/* noun

26 Nov

II. 8. A gathering for social pleasure or amusement; a social gathering or entertainment, esp, of invited guests at the Waverley Bowling Club.

III. A single person.

Both these definitions come from my (paradoxically huge) Shorter Oxford Dictionary. Guess which one applies to what YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS will be doing on Saturday the 5th December?

No it’s not a trick question. But to recap (for those of you who have been too busy watching the Liberals self-implode to read your emails and/or RSVP??!!).

There are three parts to this /’pâ:ti/:

1. For those who want to get a headstart:

From 4 pm to 6 pm, it will be all lawn bowls.

2. For BGSR members, family and significant others:

From 6 pm to 8 pm, it will be all BGSR trophy giving, speech giving and just plain giving in the form of a raffle with GREAT PRIZES TO BE WON, including:

  • a surfboard, courtesy of Lets Go Surfing
  • a weekend holiday at Bendalong, courtesy of Alan Deadman Real Estate
  • 2 x dinners for 4 at the Beach Rd upstairs restaurant, courtesy of The Beach Rd Hotel

And, of course, dinner.

3. Then from 8 pm to midnight, it will be all dance….dance…dance…dance. Or whatever other people do at /’pâ:tis/, like talk, drink, smoke, talk, drink, smoke, slur, drink, smoke, drink…

You do all this with other people (see II.8 above ). People that have been invited by you. That is, people you already know or met last night who you want to know better. If we all do that then we all get to hang out/dance/drink/chat/slur/smoke with people who we might not have met before. People who might believe us when we tell them about the awesome barrel we got at Bondi this morning. So invite your friends. Really we don’t mind. After all it’s free and we’re not the ones who have to clean up.

Next step is send out the invite, get your outfit sorted and, well, if you don’t know the rest by now, go back to the top of  the page.

Your Committee.

* To all you linguists out there, yes, I did make this up.
