As the sun sets on BGSR for 2008 it’s time to reflect on the great year behind us and the exciting things ahead of us! But before I plunge into the details – thanks again to Let’s Go Surfing – they are our major sponsors extraordinaire and the best surf school in the land!!
1. AGM - For those who can wait to get back into it, our Annual General Meeting is on Wednesday 11th February starting at 7.00pm. All members are welcome. This is where we catch up after a great summer of surfing, set out our plan for 2009 and select committtee members. You will be emailed the location details (directly) closer to the time.
2. 2009 Comp Season – The first comp of the 2009 season will be Saturday 7th March at Bondi Beach. Check the Blog for more info closer to the time.
3. 2008 Season highlights:
Supporting our community - Through the funds raised from the 07 Wax On Party we held a BBQ to present donations of $500 to each of 4 local charities including: Wairoa School for the disabled, Bondi Beach Public School for a special ed teacher, Bondi Outreach Project and Victims of Homicide.
Chloe Byron Memorial Longboard Comp – What a sensational day as all the local boardriders came together to share good waves, food, a few beers, and the great memories of our friends and loved ones lost to the Bali bombings. Congratulations to Milo, winner of the women’s division – she went off! Cheers to Chloe for ensuring Huey delivered the goods.
Jim Beam Women’s Interclub – We entered 3 (yes 3!) competitive teams at this event with the help of the girls from Let’s Go Surfing. It was a ‘rockin’ day at Curl Curl Beach. Two teams made the semi finals and one of our teams came 4th in the final. The winner in surfing is the one who has the most fun and BGSR came out way ahead on this day.
Pink Ribbon Day - Thanks to Kim McMahon and some of our members who shared a great day at Kim’s place raising money for Breast Cancer from the unsuspecting walkers between Bronte and Tamarama. $5000 was raised in more creative ways than you can imagine – it never ceases to amaze me what a bunch of surfer chicks can achieve when they put their mind to it!
Wax On II – Speaking of what can be achieved……once again our Wax On II party was absolutately sick and we raised $3000. At the AGM we’ll decide how we use the funds to support our club activity but more importantly contribute to our local community through donations. Many thanks to all those who made this night an outstanding success – you are all amazing and inspirational!! A big thank you to Beach Road Hotel – without their support Wax On would melt in the sun!!
And not forgetting that we achieved all the above at the same time as running our monthly comps, going for our crazy weekends away and making lots of new friends in and out of the water.
So that’s a wrap for season 2008 – lots to be proud of and lots of great memories. Let’s all go and share some great waves during this festive season with family, friends and strangers. Share the spirit of surfing amidst the chaos of the summer crowds. 2009 is BGSR’s 10th Birthday so we are looking forward to a cracker! See youse then ladies! Rad Mad
